Slideshow of Ishinomaki Kids' Fair

We at Free Tohoku were delighted to have the service of an excellent photographer, May Arai of Kamakura, who volunteered to help in Ishinomaki along with her daughter. Please have a look at some of her pictures, on a slideshow top right. I think they give an honest taste of what it was like to do the fair (hard work, but lots of fun).

石巻こどもまつりー感動した日 Ishinomaki kids' fair: What a day!

９月１８日（日）石巻こどもまつりに向けて、我孫子寿のダンススタジオナガオカ倉庫から物資を運び出し、夜中の１２時に１５人のスタッフを乗せた虹のバスが発車した。

雨予報がでていたこともあり、天気を少し心配していたけど、信じられない程の晴天に恵まれ、２００人以上の人たちが訪れてくれた。

石巻河南から町へ向かう途中、ホントに驚いた。すっかり瓦礫も片付けられ、町中には色が出ていた。５月に行った時はまだまだどこも泥と瓦礫でいっぱいで、町はただただ茶褐色だったのに。どれだけボランティアスタッフががんばり、どれだけ現地の人々が汗水流してここまで持って来れたのか、それを考えるだけで胸がいっぱいになった。

やっぱりスゴいよ。人間って。

日和山公園から見渡す石巻はとっても素晴らしかった。「こんなにも大きくて素晴らしい町、絶対に復興してほしい」と心の中でつぶやいた。

現地で荷物の運びはかなり困難。駐車場から２００mは自力で急斜面を荷物もって移動。殆どのスタッフがこれで筋肉痛になってしまった。

まつりのセットアップ中に応援スタッフがたくさん来てくれた。

Jamie Elbanna率いるボランティアチームは、私たちにモーニングコーヒーを用意して待ってくれていた。テント生活で自分たちも大変なのに、その心温まる気持ちがホントに嬉しかった。

自衛隊も行かなかった十三浜で、一生懸命ボランティア活動しているNGO JENのメンバーも子供まつりのためにわざわざ来てくれた。

いつも石巻で活動を共にさせていただいている『保健室のあねさん』チームもパワー全開できてくれた。このあねさんチームからの情報がないと私たちも全く動けない。ホントに素晴らしい方々ばかりで、感謝につきません。

総勢ボランティア数４０名でお祭りのセッティング。

９時半受付開始の時にはもうかなり子ども連れ家族が来ていた。その中にも見た事ある子どもたちやママたちがいて、挨拶を交わす。

「はるばるまた来てくれてありがとう。」その言葉をもらうたびにホッとした。

アイルランドのバロン・ナショナル・スクールからご支援いただき、購入できた大型トランポリン２台。子どもたちはキャッキャッ言いながら飛び跳ねていた。

「もっともっと高くとべるよ。」って言いながら。

宝探しでもらった宝はお菓子と文房具とおもちゃの山。子どもの身長よりもおおきな紙袋をもらう子どももいたりで、微笑ましかった。

その宝の山をみて、ママさんたち１０人が我が家に集まって宝物袋詰めしてくれた日のことを思い出した。汗だくになって１２０人分の袋を作ってくれた。そんな一人一人のママの気持ちが込められたこの宝、だからこそこんなに子どもが喜んでくれるんだと思った。

「宝物の中にレターセットが入っていますようにってお願いしたらね、ちゃんと入っていたの。」ってリラックマのレターセットをうれしそうに見せてくれた女の子もいた。

ヨーヨーが気に入って何度も何度も見せに来てくれた男の子もかわいかった。

「お菓子がこんなにあったら、１個だけってお母さんにいわれなくてもいいね。」っていう高学年の男の子もいた。

やっぱり子どもだもん。うれしいよね。お菓子におもちゃがたくさんもらえたら。

手作りアイスクリームも好評。暑い暑い日だったけど、コチコチのバニラアイスが完成し、子どもたちはトッピングしながら満足そうに食べていた。

私がお手伝いした子どもたちの１人が「あやちゃんもアイス好きだったよ。」ってボソッといった。「今日来てないの？」って聞くと、「うん。津波で死んじゃったの。」って普通に話してくれた。動揺したのはわたし。そういう事を想定して「来てないの？」なんて聞くべきでは無かったと反省した。

クライマックスのビンゴ大会の時には、大人用と子ども用のビンゴを同時に進行させた。

途中子どもたちの中で１〜７５の数字が探せない子どもがいたりで、「お父さんお母さん、お子さんのビンゴカードも見てあげて下さいね。」なんてつい言ってしまったら、私の隣に立っていた男の子が「おとうさんもおかあさんもいない。」ってわたしにしがみついて言った。

その場にいなかっただけなのか、永遠にいなくなってしまったのか未だにわからない。

その子とずっと手をつないでビンゴが終るのを見守った。

まだこんなにこんなに小さな手なのに、なんでこんなに大変な思いをさせるんだ？

悔しい気持ち、悲しい気持ち、納得できない気持ち。。そんな気持ちでいっぱいだった。

ある男性と話した。あの日、自宅で津波がくるのを目の前で見た。テレビには映らないようなものまで流されているのもはっきり見てしまった。今更逃げてもだめだと思って、２階に夫婦で上がり、窓からその水の流れを見ていた。でも不思議な事に家の中には、水は１滴も入らなかったんだって。奇跡が起こったって言ってた。

次の週に長野の兄妹から車を運んで来てもらい、それ以来ずっと被災者の支援を続けている。その奥さんは保健室のあねさんチームの１人。自分が生かされた以上、出来る事をしなければと思ったそうです。

５月６月に石巻入りしたときは、正直、どうやってこの町は元に戻るのかと思った。

でも今は必ず復興できると信じる事ができるようになった。

スゴいんだよ。石巻の人は。

氷を調達してくれた曽波ノ神屋のおじさんが言ってた。「３００年の伝統の店をそう簡単に壊されちゃたまんないね。どうにかしてやっていくしかないでしょう。」

こんなに頑張っている人たちがいることを忘れないためにも、この町の復興を見届けたい。そんな思いでいっぱいになった。

大人が一生懸命頑張っている姿をみて、自分たちも頑張ろうとしている子どもたちの事をずっと応援していきたい。褒めてあげる人がいないとだめでしょう。

今回も大勢の方々からご協力いただき、ありがとうございました。

はしゃぎ回る子どもたちをみて、そしてその笑う子どもたちを優しい目で見守る親御さんをみて、子供まつりを企画して本当によかったと心より思いました。

最後に石巻の地元のママから素敵なお言葉を頂いたので、ここに書きます。

＠freetohoku こども達に楽しい思い出をありがとうございました。震災以来あたたかい支援を受けているこども達も、いつか人を思う気持ちを行動に移せる大人になってくれたらいいな☆と思っています。

Fifteen people gathered at Dance Studio Nagaoka in Abiko at midnight on Saturday,   September 18th and loaded the rainbow bus. According to the weather forecast, it was going to rain, the precursor to the typhoon that is now hitting Abiko as I type this, but we were lucky it was a nice sunny day. In the end, over 200 people attended the fair, at least, before we stopped counting.

On the way there, through the centre of Ishinomaki, I was so surprised to see the debris had

been cleared and we could see colours. When I vistited in May, it was full of mud and debris everywhere. The only colour was brown. If I imagine how hard volunteers and the locals had worked, I couldn't begin to find words to explain the effort involved. People are amazing sometimes. It was such a wonderful view from Hiyoriyama Park and I thought what a wonderful city, I thought this place deserves to rise again.

It was a hard job carrying all the supplies from the bus 200 meters to the park, all of us had aching muscles. There were so many supporters who came to volunteer their time with us. Jamie Elbanna and his team made morning coffee for us, even though they were living in tents. That warmed our hearts. NGO JEN members who are working hard in Jusanhama, where even the Japanese military couldn't get to, came to help the kids' fair. Also, the school nurses team led by Emi-sensei, were full of beans, as usual. Freetohoku couldn't do anything without the information and other help from them.

Over all, about 40 volunteers started setting up. People started showing up from 9.30am. I greeted some mothers and kids I'd met before. "Thank you for coming again." Each time I heard that phrase, I felt so relieved.

We brought with us two big (very heavy) trampolines paid for by Ballon National School in Ireland and the kids were quick to get jumping. They said they wanted to jump higher and higher.

At the treasure hunt, we had a 120 bags full of stationery, toys and sweeties. It was quite cute to see some of the kids carrying bags bigger than themselves. When I looked at the pile of treasure, it reminded me of the 10 mothers who gathered at my house who had sweated to death to arrange the goodie bags on the Wednesday before. Thanks to them, these kids were able to experience such joy.

There was a little girl who said: "I made a wish that there would be a letter set in my treasure bag. And then there was a letter set!" A little boy showed me his yo-yo. Many times. Many many times! He couldn't quite make it work, but still, it was so cute. There was a big boy who said: "I have so many sweets in this bag, my mother can't tell me 'Just have one today'."

It's nice to receive sweets and toys, don't you think? They are still kids after all.

The homemade-ice-cream stall was also very popular. It was a hot day, but still we were able to make solid, real vanilla ice cream. One of the girls said: "Aya-chan would have like

d this ice cream." I said, "Oh, she's not coming today?" And she said, matter of fact, "No, she died in the tsunami." I was speechless. What was I thinking, asking such a question?

The climax was a bingo competition. Kids and adults were involved at the same time. Some of the kids couldn't find the numbers from 1 to 75, so I said, "Mummies and Daddies, please check your child's bingo card!" A boy right next to me said: "My Daddy and Mummy aren't here." I

didn't know if he meant just right now, or permanently. I held his hand all the way until we finished the bingo. It's such a shame that one with such small hands, had to cope with such big suffering.

I had so many feelings at the same time - frustration, confusion, sadness. I spoke with an older man. He had watched the tsunami from his home. He saw clearly things they don't

show on TV. He thought it was too late to run away. He and his wife went upstairs and watched the water flowing past the window. But a miracle happened. Not a drop of water came in t

heir house. The following week, his brother brought a car to them from Nagano Prefecture. Since

then, they have been spending their time supporting other tsunami victims. His wife is one of the school nurses who have been helping so many. She said she had been gifted her life again, so she felt it was only right to use it to help others from now on.

When I went to Ishinomaki in May and June, to be honest, I didn't know how this town could rise again. But now, I'm absolutely positive this will happen.

Ishinomaki people are amazing.

When I picked up ice from Soba no Kamiya, the owner said: "I don't want anyone to ruin a

300-year-old shop and get away with it. I have to carry on somehow."

To remember these people who are working so hard, I want to see the city completely revived. Adults are trying so hard. Their children see them, and do the same. I want to help those

children. Somebody has to praise them.

Thank you very much for your co-operation. When we were looking at the kids running

around and we see their parents laughing as their kids laugh, I thought to myself, I was so happy to have organised this kids' fair.

At the end, I received a nice comment on Twitter from an Ishinomaki Mum. I want to share it here with you:

@freetohoku Thank you very much for giving the children a nice memory. I hope that one day, these children will become adults who will be able to translate their warm feelings to help others into real action that makes a difference.

石巻こどもまつり ９月１８日 Ishinomaki kids fair

『我孫子今井タクシー』さんより格安で大型車両+運転手２名をご支援していただき、

freetohoku我孫子寿会のスタッフ１５名、『石巻こどもまつり』に向かいます。

石巻市内の小学校２１校、幼稚園７校へ電話連絡し、ポスターを掲示板へ貼って頂けることとなりました。『保健室のあねさんチーム』、『石巻ママコミュ』、ツイッターよりお申し出いただいた方々等、いろいろな方々のお力添えをいただき、ポスターが石巻で貼られ、広く宣伝される事を祈っています。

アイルランドの『Ballon National School』からいただいた大切な支援金¥62,600で大型トランポリンを２台購入しました。「空高く飛びたい」と言っている子供たちにいいプレゼントになるでしょう。

『ホテルグリーンプラザ』さんよりビンゴ大会の一等賞として、ホテルグリーンプラザ軽井沢の一泊２食付き家族券をご支援いただきました。素晴らしいご支援感謝です。

ダメもとで連絡した多くのお菓子、駄菓子企業の中で、『明治製菓』さんからマーブルチョコ120個とポポロン120個、『カルビー』さんからは、かっぱえびせん120個とサッポロポテトバーベQ味120個のご支援を頂ける事になりました。驚きと感謝でいっぱいです！

『柏オールソウルズ　ゴスペルクワイア』主催のゴスペルコンサートの募金¥36,500をご支援いただきました。石巻で再開された『割烹竹ふじ』さんにておにぎり、唐揚げ、焼きそばを１００人分注文しました。

埼玉県と佐賀県からもfreetohokuを応援していただいている方々から、おもちゃ、お菓子等愛情がたくさん詰まった箱を頂きました。思わず涙が出てしまいました。

我孫子『なかむら歯科』さんからも毎回たくさんご支援いただいています。今回の大型車両レンタル代も半分ご支援いただき、発電機の手配やその他の物資もいろいろ準備して頂いております。感謝してもしきれません。

『ダンススタジオナガオカ』さんからは綿菓子機のご支援、アイスクリーム用の牛乳や生クリームや文具のご支援いただきました。いつもいつも助けてもらっています。

毎回の事ながら、我孫子・柏のママさんたちからぞくぞくとおもちゃ、お菓子、文具等をいただいています。愛情いっぱいいっぱいのプレゼント本当にありがとう。

ツイッターで石巻地元の方々から情報いただき、石巻の曽波ノ神屋さんで氷を調達できることになりました！これでかき氷もアイスクリーム作りもバッチリ！

いつも支援イベントに全力を尽くしていらっしゃる『保健室のあねさん』たちも、かき氷やいなり寿司やフリーマーケット等いろいろ考えて頂いてます。心強い。

石巻地元のパパさんが、綿菓子機の担当を引き受けてくれました。真心こもった綿菓子ができることでしょうね。

子どもが笑顔で元気だと大人もきっと元気になる。そしてそれが復興へとつながると信じています。一緒に頑張りましょう。

The story so far...

Abiko Imai Taxi is supporting us with a vehicle and two drivers at a discounted price to transport 15 volunteers from Abiko for the Free Tohuku kids' fair in Ishinomaki.

We contacted 21 primary schools and seven kindergartens to put up posters for the fair.

Volunteer school nurses in the Ishinomaki area, mothers and tweeters have offered to put posters around the city.

We received ￥62,600 from Ballon National School in Ireland and used it to buy two trampolines. It will be a nice present for kids who said they wanted to jump up high.

Hotel Green Plaza has offered one night with two meals for a family of four at their Karuizawa resort hotel as a bingo competition prize. How wonderful.

I didn't expect any response, but I contacted many sweet companies, then Meiji offered 120 Marble chocolates and 120 Poporom sweeties. Calbee is giving 120 kappa ebi-sen crackers and 120 Sapporro Potato BBQ crisps. I'm suprised and gratified.

Kashiwa All Souls Gospel Chior raised ￥36,500 from a concert and donated it to us. With this we ordered 100 rice balls, fried chicken and yaki soba noodles through Takefuji which reopened in Ishinomaki city.

We have received lots of toys and sweets with love from Saitama and Saga prefectures. I cried to open the box.

Abiko Nakamura dentists will pay half of our mini-bus rental fee and is paying for a portable generator, and many other relief goods. I can't say how much I appreciate this.

Dance Studio Nagaoka has rented a cotton candy machine for us, bought stationery, and milk and cream for making ice cream. They are always giving us help.

Also, lots of mothers from Abiko and Kashiwa have donated lots of toys, sweets and stationery. We're still receiving more every day. Thank you so much for these heartfelt gifts.

Ishinomaki residents told me that Sobano Kamiya has reopened, so we ordered ice from them to make snow cones and ice cream.

School nurses from the Ishinomaki area are providing food and a free jumble sale.

An Ishinomaki Daddy has offered to run the cotton candy machine, so we are happy to welcome him.

When kids smile and are full of beans, it rubs off on the adults too. That power leads to reconstructing the city. That's what we believe. Let's do the best we can together.

Our only wish is that loads of kids come along on the 18th of September.

石巻子供まつり ９月１８日

7月3日に石巻の『保健室の姉さんたち』が子供たちをバスで草原に連れて行って、ピクニックしました。子供たちは喜んだそうです。

参加していた２年生の子が「楽しいね。鳥になった気分だね。」ってつぶやいて、えみ先生は涙がでそうだったって電話で言ってました。

7月17日十三浜のわかめ産業復活に全力を尽くしている、我孫子仲村歯科チームが4トン車の支援物資をもって北上中学校でお祭りしてきました。

45人の子供たちがいる石巻の橋浦保育園から「給食に出す米がない。消毒薬、虫除けが切れてしまった」とヘルプの連絡が入り、現地のが米30キロすぐに届ける。ママ友たちから支援してもらった消毒薬、虫除け等は、

10箱になりました。ありがとう。ちゃんと届けてもらいましたよ。

14の保育園、幼稚園を経営されている理事長から、「橋浦保育園を全面的に支援したい」とおっしゃっていただき、名刺を渡してもらいました。

人のつながり、出会いって本当に大切ですね。

そして、石巻での子供祭り。

9月18日に日和山公園にて開催しようと思っています。

今回もfreetohoku寿会、保健室の姉さんたち、我孫子仲村歯科チームのジョイントです。

ツイッター等で地元の人に開催場所を確認しました。

一番人気だったのは、高台にあり、津波被害のない場所の日和山公園。

ボランティアの先生方もずっと行きたかった場所だといい、

予約が難しいと言われましたが、石巻市役所に連絡するとすぐに予約できました。

今回は現地の声をたくさん聞いて、現地の人たちとともに子供祭りを開催したいです。小学校に招待状送ります。

今候補に挙がっている内容は以下。

子供とクッキング（火が使えないので、クッキーの模様かき、かき氷、綿菓子）
